A Serendipitous Beginning: Inspiration at a Funeral Director’s Convention

In the summer of 2016, without realizing it at the time, I planted the seed for what would become the perfect gratitude-inspired graphic tee. I set up a booth at a funeral director’s convention to introduce my Memory Bags to funeral homes. Fashion wasn’t on my radar at all.

Directly across from me were two women selling religious-themed graphic tees. Their message was beautiful, but the shirts themselves were white, unisex, and boxy. As a curvy woman, I couldn’t see myself wearing one. That’s when inspiration struck.

What if a graphic tee could carry a meaningful message and actually flatter real bodies?

That question stayed with me long after the convention ended.

From Concept to Creation: Market Research and Design

When school resumed, I shared the idea with my lunch crew and started taking action. I searched for the best-quality, most flattering tees. I brainstormed meaningful sayings, explored different colors and fonts, and thought carefully about fit.

Then I asked family and friends for honest feedback.

The response was unanimous: make them and we’ll buy them.

A few weeks later, the very first batch of #GRATEFUL graphic tees was printed, and an idea officially became a reality.

Launch and Initial Success

Family, friends, and coworkers were the first to place orders. One Friday, several of us decided to wear our #GRATEFUL tees to work.

As I walked into the building, I was met with the most incredible sight. Women of all shapes and sizes were wearing my colorful tees. I felt an overwhelming sense of pride as tears welled up in my eyes.

My fellow teachers looked amazing, and our high school students spent the entire day surrounded by visible messages of gratitude. In that moment, I knew the mission had been accomplished.

Seven years later, a teacher friend called to tell me that a current student was proudly wearing one of those shirts. We still have no idea how he got it, but the message of gratitude clearly lives on.

Convention and Workshop Success

Before the pandemic, I regularly set up shop at markets, conventions, and weekend workshops. By the final day of each event, at least half the attendees were wearing one of my graphic tees.

Years later, when I returned to conventions, I heard the same feedback again and again.
“I bought your shirt years ago, and it still looks brand new.”
“People stop me all the time to tell me how much they love it.”

Those moments reinforced the quality, longevity, and heart behind every tee.
